Visual Arts Program


                                       VISUAL ART CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS              

The visual arts are integrated into our daily programming in our Preschool and Learning Center programs that operate year-round.  Additionally we offer special workshops and classes in specific visual art techniques and media throughout the year.

                               Summer 2021 Visual Arts Workshops

Painting: Monday, June 14th – Thursday, June 17th from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Have fun with color and paint while creating your own unique paintings. Some will be your own planned subject matter as well as some step-by-step paintings. You will hone your painting skills with lessons on mixing and applying color, gradients and color transfers, textures, and material care. 

Ages: for students entering 1st grade through 4th grade in the Fall

Cost:  $45 (please bring a water bottle and small snack)

Registration Deadline: Monday, June 7th

Watercolor: Monday, June 28th – Thursday, July 1st from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. 

Have a blast with one of the most fun art materials, watercolor! We will make 2-3 finished watercolor pieces. Some will be based around experimentation and the others will be based around creative planning! You will learn and practice different techniques such as wet to dry and wet to wet color application, glazes and gradients, creating textures, and mixing colors.

Ages: for students entering 1st grade through 4th grade in the Fall

Registration Deadline: Monday, June 21st  

Drawing Techniques:  Monday, July 12th – Thursday, July 15th from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. 

This class will focus on basic drawing skills while having fun with a variety of drawing materials, such as colored pencil, charcoal & pastel, and oil pastel. We will create still-life drawings, play art games, and create artwork through step-by-step drawing lessons. You will practice creating value scales (light to dark) and learn how to use your pencil as a tool, such as measuring and finding angles.

Ages: for students entering 1st grade through 4th grade in the Fall

Art with Clay: Monday, July 26th – Thursday, July 29th from 8:30 – 4:30 a.m.

This is a great class for beginner clay workers. We will learn a variety of clay making techniques with air-dry clay that will be painted with acrylic paint. They will learn the basics of slip and score technique to add other clay parts to their designs. They will make projects using pinch, coil, and slab techniques to create fun and functional pieces of artwork. NOTE: we will NOT be using a kiln for this class so will not be doing firing techniques

Visual Art Class Descriptions (Fall/Spring)

Sketchbook and Drawing
Students will learn how to visually record their lives and their creativity through the use of a sketchbook. Basic drawing skills and techniques will be taught through various exercises. The goals of this class are to become better at drawing as well as exploring creativity. It is recommended that students have their own sketchbook

Students will learn the fundamentals of painting. Lessons will include color theory and basic techniques such as layering and highlighting. Students will learn to break down objects to simple forms then build in details. This class will provide the knowledge and confidence to tackle painting; learning will take place through use of demonstrations, guidance, and class exercises

Creating Comic Books:
Students will explore the art of cartooning by creating shapes, characters, and figures that have a "cartoon" feel. Students will learn a wide variety of skills in each class, with subjects ranging from character design to storyboarding to creating their own mini-comics. All students will complete a fun project

Multi-Media Technique
: Students will explore various mediums throughout the course of the session; from drawing, to painting, to 3D modeling, to working with clay....students will discover their own creativity and expression through an array of medium studies

Illustrations:  Illustration is everywhere... from advertisements, to video games, to storybooks. This class focuses on drawing and painting scenes, stories, characters, and other fun projects that everyday illustrators work on

Hands On Art:
This hands-on class will explore art through the use of our hands and is perfect for kinesthetic and tactile learners. Sponging, finger painting, and hand mixing are just a few of the topics that will be 'touched' on!

Creative Buffet:  
Our youngest artists will enjoy this multi-media class; hands-on projects will allow the independent exploration of age-appropriate art materials: painting, gluing/cutting/collage, and working with clay/dough will allow students to explore art with a wide variety of materials and techniques

Art History:  Travel throughout the ages from cavemen to modern artwork to experience and explore how art has changed over time. Each class will get a bit of a history lesson, as well as some hands on experience in each era of art study

Masterpiece WorkshopThis once-a-month specialty workshop is designed to teach the basic skills of painting in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.  It guides students step-by-step through creating their own amazing painting.  A different picture will be painted at each workshop so register for as many as you would like.
